Can’t wait to see what 2015 has in store!

I love this time of year; the week between Christmas and New Years Day specifically. With its mix of excitement, melancholy, nostalgia, and anticipation, it can be an emotional roller coaster, a purge, an adventure, or whatever else I decide to make it, usually a big stew of all, good and bad.

At the moment, I am streaming LA’s KCRW, baking banana bread to give to neighbors, making lists, cutting up magazines, and trying to stay present in the midst of the year end hoopla. It is a strange phenomenon, how quickly one year can go by and all that can happen and change within that year; simultaneously stretching and shrinking time.

For 2014, I chose the word Happiness. I hoped to make decisions based on this word and to keep it at the forefront of my mind. Three months in, on my 35th birthday, I added the word Congruence. How did my stated desire to be happy line up with my actions and vice versa? By mid year, I felt it working. Through a combination of events and choices, I felt more grounded in my life than I had for years.

As I look towards 2015, there are many words that jump to mind; presence, adventure, fun, love, or creativity. But, the one I’m going with is Joy. Hoping to build on a foundation of Happiness, Congruence, and Presence, I want to bring more lightness, spontaneity, fun, and joy into the mix. Goals include board game playing, cocktail mixing, road tripping, camping, writing, landscaping, dancing, traveling, sun bathing, recording, and letting go of all preconceived notions of how “it” should look or be. “It” being life.

I recently read a horoscope in which the astrologer referred to Empire Building and advised me to think about the type of empire I’d like to build. So, here it is-

Tis the season to overfill schedules, eat too many sweets, purchase out of obligation, and basically lose all sense of what the season is truly about. A sense of wonder is too often replaced with one of anxiety this time of year. As I drove through an overflowing mall parking lot recently, I realized it was the last place I wanted to be and asked myself “why are you here?” The voices of obligation and frenzy had taken over when I wasn’t paying attention.

I began to look at the season as a metaphor for life, quickly realizing that unless I remained vigilant in my desire to be present and enjoy it, it would pass in a blur and, come January, I’d be left broke, chubby, and wondering when did 2015 slip through the door?

2014 has been a surprisingly happy year for me and I attribute that entirely to being more present and to letting go of an expectation for how it should be, therefor letting it be what it is. Instead of feeling that my life was living me, I made choices and decisions and could tell you exactly how I’d ended up where I was. That hadn’t been the case for many years prior.

As I look at the faces of children, and adults, in checkout lines and mall parking lots, it seems so obvious that all any of us truly want for Christmas is the presence of those around us and to feel present in our lives.

I truly adore this time of year and don’t want to miss one moment of tamale filling, house decorating, tree trimming, cookie decorating, gift making, fire building, or friend and family visiting time by not being present. There is so much beauty to be found, but only when we remember to look.

Have a Happy and Peaceful Holiday Season!

Making the best of my 4 hour drive home, I took I-10 East from Deming, instead of the usual Highway 26 towards Hatch. I’d heard about a sweet little village just south of Las Cruces called La Mesilla and decided it was the perfect place to stop for coffee, huevos rancheros at Cafe Mesilla, and a quick walk around the plaza. Passing the building which originally housed the capital of Arizona and New Mexico, and where Billy the Kid was tried and sentenced to hang, I was struck by the history that had taken place in this village I’d only briefly heard of. It was the perfect way to end my most recent crazy job in the desert of southwest New Mexico.
